How label values are rounded
Why your label says 45 when the lab says 47: the federal rule tells you exactly how to round each line of the Nutrition Facts panel.
| Line | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Calories | Under 5: 0. Up to 50: nearest 5. Over 50: nearest 10. | 47 kcal on the lab sheet prints as 45 |
| Total fat, saturated fat, trans fat | Under 0.5 g: 0. Under 5 g: nearest 0.5 g. 5 g and over: nearest 1 g. | 3.3 g prints as 3.5g |
| Cholesterol | Under 2 mg: 0. 2 to 5 mg: "Less than 5mg". Over 5 mg: nearest 5 mg. | 12 mg prints as 10mg |
| Sodium | Under 5 mg: 0. 5 to 140 mg: nearest 5 mg. Over 140 mg: nearest 10 mg. | 228 mg prints as 230mg |
| Carbohydrate, fiber, sugars, protein | Under 0.5 g: 0. Under 1 g: "Less than 1g". 1 g and over: nearest 1 g. | 0.7 g fiber prints as Less than 1g |
